HIT LIST
55-year-old grandmother Amy Appelhans Gubser is the first person to complete the 29.6-mile swim from the coast of San Francisco to the Farallon Islands.
The 17-hour swim included freezing waters, jellyfish stings, sea lion swimming buddies and the threat of great white sharks. She was monitored the entire time by her seven-person support team, who fed her and did their best to keep any apex predators at bay.
Gubser is one of six people to complete at least three of the “Toughest 13” swims in the world, according to the Marathon Swimmers Federation.

GUESS WHAT’S EXPENSIVE: Orange juice prices have hit an all-time high -- but inflation alone is not to blame.
Florida farmers are grappling with their smallest orange crop in nine decades. They blame last year’s hurricane season and a citrus greening disease for killing off their trees. [via @Barchart, Taste of Home]
MEANWHILE: A niche, California-based specialty seller of fruits and vegetables, called Melissa’s Produce, is selling a unique pineapple for the unbelievable price of $395.99.
The Rubyglow pineapple was developed by Del Monte, which might sound familiar for its canned fruit and vegetable offerings. This specific crop was grown in Costa Rica. Del Monte’s website says the pineapple is named for its “rich red color, scarce supply, and association with luxury.”
But unless you have $400 to straight-up immolate, no word yet just how delicious this pineapple is. [via CNN, DelMonte]

After he filed a motion to get a temporary emergency restraining order against her in response to an Instagram post he claims violates an NDA she signed, she shared her thoughts on the matter.
Yazdi says the things she posts online, which she called “poems,” don’t contain any confidential info or give Brown or the court the right to “enjoin [her] from speaking about matters in [her] personal life.”
She also claims that it's Brown -- not her -- who is dragging out the “divorce negotiations into the public eye” and “portray himself as a victim.”
“I will not be silenced by him no matter how ridiculous his tactics,” she concluded.
As previously reported, the couple split after only four months of marriage. [via TMZ]

ON THIS DATE
1881 - The American Red Cross is established.
Its mission paralleled the International Red Cross — bringing assistance to victims of war and natural disasters.
Clara Barton was the principal founder, in partnership with Adolphus Solomons.
Barton had worked under orders of President Lincoln to identify the remains of soldiers at the Andersonville prisoner of war camp, based on the records she kept while attending to the health of injured soldiers during the Civil War.
While in Europe during the Franco-Prussian war, she worked for the International Red Cross — and brought the idea stateside when she returned to the U.S. in 1873.
###
1901 - Connecticut passes the first speed limit law in the US.
Vehicles were limited to 12 miles per hour in cities and 15 miles per hour on country roads.
New York City would follow suit with a full-on traffic code in 1903.
As of 1930, 12 states had no speed limit and 28 did not require a driver's license. In 1974, the National Speed Limit of 55 miles per hour would come into effect, not in the interest of safety, but rather to save on fuel consumption.
In 1987, the National Speed Limit ceiling would be increased to 65.
###
1988 - Mikhail Gorbachev gets rid of Communist Party Leaders in Armenia and Azerbaijan. The move made him the leader of those two Soviet bloc nations.
But the fix would not last long as the Iron Curtain was beginning to crumble. Ethnic tensions remained in the postage-stamp satellite countries of the USSR.
Gorbachev would be the last Soviet dictator. After his resignation, the Union quickly ended.
###
1999 - Susan Lucci wins her first Daytime Emmy, after having been nominated for 19 straight years.
The “All My Children Star” was one of the highest-paid Soap actresses in the business --- with a relatively paltry $1 million a year.
The crowd gave Lucci a standing ovation that lasted several minutes.
###
2017 - The Barnum and Bailey Circus performs for the last time at the Nassau Coliseum in NYC.
The battle over animal rights dealt a seemingly fatal blow to the circus.
While the company had won a $15.75 million judgment in 2015, against the likes of PETA and other activists, they lost the larger fight with public opinion.
The show ran for 146 years.
