A California jury has awarded Michael Garcia $50 MILLION in damages after his lawsuit accusing Starbucks of negligently handling a cup of tea.
Back in February 2020, Garcia picked up a cup of tea from the cafe to deliver to a Postmates customer. The barista at the window handed him three teas in a cardboard carrying tray, when one of the cups fell onto his lap, knocking off the lid. Garcia sustained third degree burns to his groin and thighs.
Garcia’s lawyers successfully argued that the cups were not secured properly in the tray.
Starbucks plans to appeal, saying in a statement, “We sympathize with Mr. Garcia, but we disagree with the jury’s decision that we were at fault for this incident and believe the damages awarded to be excessive.” [via NBC News]
