HIT LIST
The innovative artificial intelligence “chatbot” called CHATGPT went off the rails Tuesday night, as users across the globe posted screenshots of the gibberish answers they received. In some cases, the responses were a weird mix of English and Spanish. In others, the bot spat out the same sentence or phrase over and over. Here’s some bizarre examples >
No word yet what caused the hiccup. Developers had the problem contained by Wednesday late morning and haven’t yet announced what was behind the glitch. [via Gizmodo]
WORTH NOTING: While the ability to “chat” with a computer program can make it feel like we’re living in the future, remember that the Large Language Models that power these technologies are based on predicting the words that come next as a function of ingesting the trillions of words on the internet. So a bot that spouts nonsense as a result of constantly scouring the internet might be working exactly right.

There’s a secondary border crisis not getting nearly as much attention as the flood of illegal immigrants pouring into the country: the billions of gallons of sewage that’s bubbling up from Mexico into California.
The International Boundary and Water Commission says more than 100 billion gallons of untreated sewage has flowed in from the Tijuana River in Mexico and emptied into Southern California’s coastal areas over the last five years. The mayor of Imperial Beach says, “We are living in conditions that nobody in this great nation should be living in."
These conditions have not only kept local beaches shuttered for nearly three years but has led to the San Diego State University School of Public Health calling a public health emergency. [via ABC News]

JEFF BEZOS has now dumped more than $8 BILLION worth of Amazon stock over the last two weeks, for the first time since 2021. Amazon’s stock is up more than 75% in the last year, so he’s turning it into cash at an opportune time.
TIMING: Bezos also strategically waited to change his official residence to Florida from Seattle. Just the address change is saving him an estimated $600 MILLION in taxes; Florida does not impose a state capital gains tax (or income taxes). [via BBC]
MEANWHILE, IN NORWAY: A member of Norway’s parliament has nominated ELON MUSK for the Nobel Prize, citing the billionaire’s “adamant defense of dialogue, free speech and [enabling] the possibility to express one’s views” in a “continuously more polarized world,” according to the New York Post. About four months ago, a man lost the cremated ashes of his late wife while on the ferry from Mackinac Island to the mainland – seemingly vanishing from his bag.
The man’s family took to social media, desperate for anyone in the area to give them a tip to help them find out what had happened, no hard feelings and no questions asked.
NOW: The urn holding the ashes showed up – at an area Goodwill store. One clerk figured something was strange about the donation, and did her own part on social media looking for answers. Within hours, users pointed her to the family that just a few months past had gone looking for them.
The late woman’s daughter tells local media her mom frequently shopped at Goodwill, and in a lighthearted quip, “she just wanted one last look in there before she goes home.” [via Fox19]

A Massachusetts family of three was hospitalized over the weekend due to a faulty Easy-Bake Oven.
The mom, Stephanie, detailed the ordeal on TikTok, saying her 8-year-old daughter and husband began experiencing chest pains and shortness of breath after attempting to bake a cake with the toy oven.
The three were hospitalized overnight for suspected carbon monoxide poisoning, with Stephanie recovering much faster than the other two.
She attributed her less severe symptoms to not having been in the room with the Easy-Bake Oven. Her husband and daughter, meanwhile, were prescribed steroids and inhalers. [via TikTok]

###
1990 - Milli Vanilli wins a Best New Artist Grammy, which would become the only Grammy to be rescinded.
