With just days to go until the Supreme Court decides the fate of TIKTOK, a new social media app has rocketed to the top of the App Store – and it, too, is owned by a Chinese company.
XIAOHONGSHU offers a familiar interface to most mainstream social apps, with profiles to follow and suggested interests. While the app isn’t new, having rolled out over a decade ago, it’s proving to be a landing spot for Americans preemptively bailing on TikTok.
OH, AND: “Xiaohongshu” translates to “little red book” – so they’re just laughing at us now. But for English speakers it’s branded as “RedNote,” which really isn’t much better. [via The Verge]

Police officers pulled a coyote out of the cold food section of an Aldi in Humboldt Park in Chicago on Monday.
Shoppers were shocked to see the large animal hiding behind the shelves, expecting officers to pull out something much smaller, such as an opossum or squirrel.
The coyote was taken to Flint Creek Wildlife Rehabilitation for a full health check. No word yet how it got into the store. [via Fox32]

Federal agents were spotted outside of BEN AFFLECK’s home over the weekend, though the reason why is unclear.
Sources told TMZ that officers were in the area investigating an incident involving a drone colliding with a firefighting aircraft.
Affleck was seen outside of his home Saturday after evacuating last week to ex-wife, JENNIFER GARNER’s home to be with their kids. [via TMZ]
BEYONCE’s foundation, BeyGOOD, is donating $2.5 million to support the Los Angeles wildfire relief effort, specifically those affected by the Eaton Fire.
As for why the specific focus on that blaze, insiders say the Eaton Fire hit Altadena, a historically Black neighborhood with a number of Black-owned businesses destroyed by the inferno. [via THR]

IN OTHER AWARDS NEWS: The Oscars timetable has been delayed for a second time “out of sensitivity to the SoCal community, which is home to some 60 percent of its roughly 10,000 members.”
The 97th Academy Awards is still set for March 2, but the nominations voting window has been extended from its already extended date of January 14 to January 17. Nominations will be announced sometime on January 23, delayed from the previously postponed date of January 19. [via THR]
