HIT LIST
Here’s the latest on HURRICANE MILTON as cleanup continues elsewhere from HURRICANE HELENE:
– As of Thursday evening, Florida officials confirmed 12 deaths from Milton. Two were killed from trees falling on their home and five deaths are attributed from damage by tornadoes that preceded the hurricane on Wednesday.
– Overall, Milton’s slower wind speeds as a Category 3 inflicted less damage than the worst-case scenarios that many had feared. Florida Governor RON DESANTIS said Thursday, “In some areas, in terms of what was being predicted, the worst-case scenarios did not come to pass, certainly in terms of the storm surge.”
– Three million Florida residents were without power Thursday evening.
– Initial analysis suggests storm surges peaked at 10 feet; while still high, it’s less than the 15 feet some had feared. [via Morning Martini]

A Connecticut man is in jail after hitting a bike rider with a car, knocking the rider onto the vehicle’s roof, and driving four miles with the victim holding on for dear life.
The bike rider, a 16-year-old male, miraculously survived, though he remains in critical condition. He was found on the side of the road a few miles away. Witnesses reported a Subaru driving erratically near where the victim was found and got in touch with authorities.
IT GETS WEIRDER: Apparently the driver, 29-year-old Alex Rivera, and the other adult passenger had no idea the victim was on the roof until the passenger saw a foot dangling by the passenger window. That’s when Rivera says he “freaked out” and pushed the victim off the roof then sped off again.
He later turned himself in to police. Rivera remains held on $100,000 bond and faces multiple charges. [via WFSB]

Turkish Airlines passengers en route to Istanbul from Seattle made an emergency layover in New York on Wednesday – after the pilot died in flight!
The 59-year-old pilot, Ilcehin Pehlivan, reportedly lost consciousness after takeoff. The co-pilot-turned-pilot made the decision to land. Despite medical intervention, by the time wheels touched down, the pilot was pronounced dead.
Pehlivan most recently had a medical evaluation in March that showed no health problems connected to his job duties.
Fortunately, everyone else is okay. [via CNN]

There’s a new world record for most hot sauce eaten in three minutes.
Canadian Youtuber Mike Jack recently shoveled down 2 pounds, 7 ounces of sriracha with a teaspoon in a studio at the Guinness World Records headquarters. As the Guinness folks point out, that’s about two soccer balls worth of the stuff, in terms of weight.
Jack points out that the most common question he gets is about the gastrointestinal duress he must suffer after accomplishing such a feat – but he says, “I’ve actually never experienced burn-butt before.”
He also holds the record for fastest time to down a bottle of hot sauce, at 8-and-a-half seconds. [via Guinness World Records]

COLMAN DOMINGO, LEWIS HAMILTON, A$AP ROCKY, PHARRELL WILLIAMS and LEBRON JAMES will co-chair the 2025 Met Gala, alongside Vogue’s ANNA WINTOUR.
The theme for the annual gala will be “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” inspired by the book, “Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity.”
Vogue says the exhibit will feature garments, paintings, and photographs that explore “the indelible style of Black men in the context of dandyism from the 18th-century through present day.”
The theme concerned some fashion fans, who say it could be a “recipe for appropriation,” though others say it's been a long time coming.

1776 - Before being vilified as a traitor, Benedict Arnold was a keen Patriot general; on this date he defended Valcour Island on Lake Champlain in New York from a British fleet.
Though the Continentals would eventually lose the fight, Arnold’s forces gave ground troops enough time to mount strong defenses around New York. The British advance into the city would not be attempted again until the following year.
Arnold was also a hero of the capture of Fort Ticonderoga the year before.
In 1780, angry that he had not received enough credit for his military victories, he would take a bribe from British brass and surrender American intelligence.

Historians assume Lewis took his own life while staying at Grinder’s Tavern. Gunshots were heard from his room, but no one actually saw what happened. He was found the next morning, fatally wounded, and died soon after.
